| Most country singers vocals grate on my ears. Johnny Cash is the notable exception for me. Then again, I am not a big country aficionado, and never will be. Mostly I like Johnny Cash because I used to listen to it with my grandfather while fishing. It is also mighty good music for driving through middle America when crossing it in 3 days.
I have never liked the effected tone of most country singing. Real people with southern accents don't sing like that. Heck, hillbillies generally don't have a twang when they sing. It always felt a little like a parody of something or a knockoff to me that just wasn't quite right. Thus, it never set right with me. Heck, it never set with either of my grandfathers well either. This is personal bias and I admit it. I just can't stand that kind of vocal.
And as for best country artist of all time... I am afraid Chet Atkins would be my choice as well. I have never heard a guitarist who impressed me more.
