Hmmm...

Wow, my horizons have been broadened. I had never heard of Twinkle Twinkle Lucky Star or Dragons forever. I had heard of Wheels on Meals, but I didn't know it was worth watching.

Guess I will be surfing on amazon soon...

Two movies I am very hesitant about:

Crime Story: heard it was originally supposed to be a Jet Li movie and that it is more serious.

New Police Story: heard it is uncharacteristically violent and vulgar for a Chan movie.

Anyone seen these?

There are 3 Lucky Stars movies (Winners and Sinners being the first). They're very much ensemble films with the Yuen Biao, Sammo Hung and several others. They're heavy on comedy. The fights are good, but I don't believer there are any famous fights in those films. Yuen Biao does some pretty cool movies. The bad guy from Mr. Nice Guy is the villain in one of them and fights someone. But since I can't remember what happened beyond that random fact, it's probably not impressive

Wheels on Meals and Dragons Forever aren't Westernized at all. The fights aren't the Buster Keaton heavy stuff, but it's quality choreography.

Or maybe mostly because Hollywood isn't quite ready to give up its "Kung Fu Asian" typecasting.

I was gonna rattle off some of my favorite old school Chan movies that I watched with my mom as a kid (and apparently while I was still gestating in the womb ), but it looks like y'all have it pretty well covered.

Personally I go with this theory. Whenever you see an Asian in a film where he isn't a master of some type of martial art, he's some other type cast (genius, stoner, etc.) Outside of Gran Torino, I have trouble thinking of a film with an Asian playing a prominent role where this wasn't true. I'm sure they exist somewhere.

Hmm...and those were a couple of pretty big films (though I haven't seen Sunshine yet. That being said, I just asked my wife if she knew Russell in Up was Asian and she was confused. Props to the Up team for getting an Asian kid to do the voice acting, though because it was voice acting it really could've been anyone.

Oh!!!

Thought of another jackie Chan movie that is actually ok.
It is fairly new, but is reminiscent of his older style.

It is called Robin B Hood.

I'm going to run to Blockbuster and see what they have.

Wish me luck.

Blockbuster still exists where you live? They went out of business here.

I don't think anyone has seen those films. They don't seem to understand Jackie Chan's appeal at all.
