Gibson raided by federal authorities...AGAIN!

Feds raid Gibson Guitar Corp. in Nashville - WKRN, Nashville, Tennessee News, Weather and Sports |

Something is up at Gibson and it is NOT the sky! This makes TWO TIMES they have been raided by federal authorities, no one knows what it is over but it COULD be illegal wood like the last time.

Last time no charges were filed, I do not know if that will be the case this time around. This is the second time a raid has happened at the vNashville plant and the first time for the Memphis plant.

They sent workers home at the Nashville plant after allowing them to go back into the plant and "collect their belongings". That is another way of saying...get what you need to get, because this plant is being SHUT DOWN!

Maybe Henry J and his cronies will be forced out and someone more capable will take over Gibson ?

Here is a story from the Memphis plant.

Do you ever reckon the Feds, when tipped off are all like: "We're doing a raid... for illegal wood? Come on guys. The other team gets to do drug busts! Why don't we? Srsly."

Ummmm.....The last time I looked the article it was the fish and wildlife people who raided...not the FBI!

From the article...."Agents with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service remained on the scene in Nashville Wednesday afternoon."

What would US fish and wildlife or US customs and Border protection have to do with drug busts? (Unless it was siezing drugs coming across the border for the border protection guys)

Just trying to add a bit of humour. No need to get snappy about it.

sounds like CITES wood again.

the paperwork is a nightmare.

if I buy a 1960s Martin Dread made of Braz rosewood, on ebay, from the US, and try to get the private seller to ship it to me across a border, there needs to be paperwork to prove that te wood was harvested prior to a certain date (different for different species). obviously if the guitar was build before that date (and the seller can PROVE it to the customs satisfaction) then all will be well......

until I take the guitar with me on my next world tour.........

I forsee a time when NO-ONE will be making guitars out of any woods that are, or might soon become, endangered.

choices will be limited, but then prices could come down too!

Martin, what happens if you, say have a gutiar from 1964 that has a rosewood board, but you have no way of knowing where it came from? I am just curious because I have several guitars with actually very little documentation of what they are made of. Does customs generally look at it that thoroughly?

Say I buy a german built mandolin from a small builder prior to the turn of the 20th century. (I almost have done this by the way.) How would anybody go about proving anything?

I doubt it.

Lobbying by Gibson is one thing, but lobbying by foreign companies with the goal of putting an American business down, costing American jobs and reputation for no reason but to improve the business of guitar makers in Asia? Unlikely.

But a tip from environmentalists? Far more likely.

Meh...laws are laws. If Gibson breaks 'em, they deserve to get caught.

+1

I mean, you would think Gibson would be smart enough (read: have enough lawyers) not to jeopardize their business like that.

Rumor has it that the raid was actually searching for evidence of quality control. They left without finding anything.

Guffaw.
