Mandolin

For a Mandolin, do you have to learn new chord structures or similar ones to the guitar?

and is it an easy instrument to start playing?

Well, chord structure is a little over my head, but when I learned to play mando I went online and found chord charts and just started playing. Same with any stringed instrument that I play. To me the mando was easier than guitar. Bass was easiest. Banjo was hardest. But still, once you learn one stringed instrument then the rest will come a lot easier. It has been a while since I looked up the chord charts but the best that I found for learning to play was a "2 finger chord chart".

Mandolin chord stucture is different than guitar, but if you already play guitar you should have no trouble picking up mandolin. I find it easier than guitar. I play some bluegrass so I use the full three and four finger chords as they give you a better sound IMHO.

Let me know how it works out for you; I've been wanting to check out the mandolin too but I'm lame about the effort I want to put in.

Nice, hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy mine.

The trick to figuring out chords is to invert the shapes of chords on the top four strings of a guitar.

check out the forums on Mandolin Café (google search). Lots of good info on there. There is also a mandolin chord generator & mandolin tabs on the website which are handy.
