I'm looking for a set of pickups that sound like a 60's telecaster. Bright but not spikey on the treble, clear and punchy but not too hot.

I generally use the middle position with hardly any treble rolled off, and occasionally use the neck with more of it rolled off but I never switch to the bridge because rather than the tone being clear with a little bit of twanginess, it sounds honky. I would really like a clear, glassy bridge pickup, a balanced rich middle tone and a slightly warmer, punchy sounding neck.

Does that sound like a tele still? If not, i might just get a Les Paul with p90's.

I think I would go with lollar or fralin underwound.

I love the Joe Bardens in my Tele copy. I also have a Barden "Two-Tone" in the middle position.

elliotz18: Thanks for the tip but the Joe Bardens are still out of my price range.

I've actually been in touch with Tim from Bare Knuckle Pickups and he has been really helpful, and as a result I'm going to gather the money to get a set of his pickups, so I'll let you guys know how they work out when I get them.

Don't even look at the price tag. Expensive doesn't necessarily mean good. Go for a set of pickups that make that sound you're hearing in your head. Nobody will even care who made them except for a few guitar geeks. Where do you want your sound to go?

Great point. I don't know why you would avoid SD's they are generally pretty good pickups and not that spendy. And if you install them no one will know or even care what brand they are.

But the guitar has to be right with you.

Daddyo: I figure that I can get better pickups for about the same money which are made by a smaller maker, thereby avoiding the potential for less lovingly handmade products and supporting alternative makers. I'm more and more leaning towards bareknuckle pickups partly because they're based in England as well.

I've not really got anything against seymour duncans particularly, but it's like I don't have anything against a particular brand, but if I can get a better guitar thats handmade for the same price, I think I would for that one.

Look into bare knuckle pickups and guitar fetish pickups.
