Scour the used market for a good ol' JCM800 or JCM900? Those would probably do just fine if he wants to rock the Marshall tone.

I really like the JMP Marshalls but pay attention to the model numbers. Model numbers you might go for is the 1987 and 1959 Which are the same amp in two versions ... 50w (1987) and 100w (1959). These were made for a long time and the better priced versions were made in years 1975 to the 80's. Also the JCM 800's are nice and look for model numbers 50w (2204) and 100w (2203). The better sounding 800's IMO were made in the early 80's up till 1984. The JCM 900's were nice too but Marshall was notoriously inconsistent at the time. Each of the models listed have since been offered as reissues as well and they are solid amps.
