Tuning an acoustic 101?

So my tuners battery died... and it might be a week before i have time to get another one (takes forever to get to stores on my moped!) So, I guess back to the basics, how do you tune a guitar without a tuner?

Go to tunemybass.com, it has a guitar and bass tuner. Or go steal some batteries out of somthing else. I usually steal the batteries out of the TV remote.

If you have a smartphone, you can get a tuner app.

You can use the old 'A-string strobes when in tune' trick to get you pretty close.

Find something that makes the E pitch perfectly (or at least really well), which will probably be achieved most readily by Googling online guitar tuner. Once you get that low E sound, either tighten or loosen your low E string until it matches it (being careful not to go too sharp and break the string --- it's sometimes easy to do this while tuning by ear).

Once you've gotten your low E string where you want it, you're in business. Simply fret the 5th fret of the E string and then pluck it and your A string, then tune your A string until it's the same exact pitch as your E string 5th fret. Lather, rinse, repeat, with one exception: When tuning the B string, fret the G string 4th fret, not 5th. Otherwise, it's identical.

I seem to recall, from when I was about 8 years old and just starting guitar, that you could tune to a telephone dial tone, but I don't remember what pitch that is.

Of course, that was back when Alexander Graham Bell was still running the phone company....

You could steal the batteries out of a watch then, but for some reason this makes people really mad!

My system at work is kind of an A note. It's a wee bit flat but close enough for rock 'n roll.
