I'm a tradesman, and I'd say my favorite tools to use at home are an Impact drill, some pry bars, and a good utility knife. Probably a 3/4 " ofla knife. Pry bars (not to be confused with goose necks or crow bars) are small bars that are excellent for all sorts of jobs involving prying, scraping, and nail pulling etc. Tons of uses, completely necessary to carry a pair.

If for example, you built a deck, they say you would save like 8 hours screwing by using an impact drill over a regular drill. Also if you ever build that deck, ship some robertson screws from canada, they are way better than crappy philips screws... They don't strip as easy.

Another thing to think about is to do your research on which brand on power tools you want. Once you start buying things such as a drill, an impact, a circular saw etc, you don't want to switch brands later, by buying a saw zall from somewhere else. Your batteries wouldn't be interchangeable. You want to find a brand with quality and reasonably cheap batteries to begin with, and always be on the look out for bundle sales and such at places like home depot.

Is that anything like a chick magnet? Because I bought mine from a late night TV infomercial for 3 easy payments of $19.99 (plus one really hard and complicated payment) and that thing only ever worked one time.

You really only need a stud finder if you are hanging some pretty heavy stuff. Drywall anchors are a must, though. All of the things I have had on my walls, I've never had to use a stud.

I seriously prefer my $10 German made hand drill. Its more reliable, fits in more places and reliably has more torque. (which is kind of sad) Also, if you leave batteries on the charger, I believe it fairly substantially shortens their lives. Then again, I have a thing against battery powered tools and guitars, because invariably they fail me when I need them most inexplicably.

Vise grips are amazing. I far prefer the old US made ones you can find used. I tend to bend the metal on some of the newer chinese made ones.

I use a ton of hand tools and find what I use most around the house are my drill, my hammer, screwdrivers, and a pair of saws. A regular one and a keyhole saw are musts for me.

Bill, my grandfather gave me a toolbox when I left for college. He made it thirty years ago out of wood and canvas. Best part of it is that he put a few extra tools in it. You know, ordinary stuff, like Craftsman pliers and vice grips from the 1950s. My dad has attempted to take them from me three times.
