OK, all seriousness aside, the foot tapping
was my real advice. I play along with a lot of different people and all have different levels of ability. I always tell them to tap their foot to the beat so that they can keep the rhythm and also let the other musicians know what rhythm they are keeping. I even tell the singers who do not play to do the same.
You play bass much like I do. After someone said to not put your thumb over the fretboard I checked to see where I put my thumb. Yep, you guessed it - right where you do. I don't consider myself a bass player although I can do it. I am asked regularly to play when there are no other bassists available.
Listen to what you play. If it sounds good to you then that's all that matters for now. Once you're able to consistantly play a song that sounds good to you then you can go on to trying out different things.
And it is best to place your thumb on the back of the neck.
Also, never let your hair get tangled in the strings or tuning keys.
