This is true.

PB&J is solid for ambient delays, but if you need tap precision it's not going to work out.

True, but I'm thinking budget combo. I've always used a DD-3, so tap has never been a need for me. I'm an "ambient" delay guy I guess, not a heavy user.

Good point. Until I picked up my DD-5, the PB&J was my go to delay pedal. I spent a lot of time trying to dial it in rhythmically so over time I was able to use it as a rhythmic pedal and not just for ambiance or short delays. Since getting the DD-5, I've completely lost that ability.

A BM and a PB&J combo could probably be picked up for $100 new...I'd guess around $60-$70 used.

Starting out, a good distortion and a good delay are a great idea.

I am going to suggest two Ibanez pedals. First, an Ibanez TS7 Tube Screamer. It is the classic Tube Screamer circuit, but it also has an additional switch which kicks the pedal up a notch. The "HOT" setting is killer.

Second, the Ibanez DE7 Delay/Echo. It has a delay range of up to 2.6 seconds. There is a mode switch to go from Echo (clean, crisp digital delay tone) or Delay (softer, rounder, more muted analog delay/tape echo type tone.)

Both are from Ibanez' "Tone-lok" series. I have heard these pedals have just been discontinued, but I see them around for $40 or under each. I have several Tube Screamers, including an original, but the TS7 gets all the use.

They are also easy to mod, and mods for them are all around the internet. I've modded dozens of Tube Screamers for friends and customers.

Cool Cat drive and/or transparent overdrive. Digitech digidelay, or a little more and get a Line 6 Echo Park. Yup.

For $130 go Cool Cat drive v2 (one in production) and score a used Eco Park, you can get this with $140, and you may still have enough for a BM.

But that being said my Vox likes my Boss OD-3 best, even better than my Boutique, high end Modified TS type pedal.

But my Vox is a Pathfinder, but it sounds just as good with an ac30.

What is you amp exactly?

I am going to throw out another delay option. Marshall Echohead is a fun and good digital delay with external tap. That or a dd-5 would be my choice for budget. I have bought 2 of the marshalls over the last couple years for under $50.

I find I need tap.

You can get a Rogue Analog delay pedal from Musiciansfriend.com for $29.99.
They are true bypass and use bucket-brigade technology. the Rouge sound better than the MXR Carbon Copy but only has 320ms compared to the MXR which has 640ms. Also the Rouge is easy to mod

As far as Overdrive pedals go, if you need something low priced, A Boss OD-3 or BD-2 Blues driver is a good starting point, although their highs are harsh..they run 70-90bubks

If you need something super cheap, check out Berhinger or Dan Electro pedals which average $15.00-30.00, sound excellnent but they are made of plastic and do not use that great of a buffer. However for starting it's not a bad thing...they will get you familiar with effects and help you to learn which ones you favor or don't need
