AT&T purchases T-Mobile

I'm not going to share my opinion as an employee of the purchased company. I don't know how this affects my job or really anything or if the deal will be approved by the FTC. But with this AT&T will overtake Verizon as the nations largest Cellular carrier. I'm a little scared at the moment, to be honest.

AT&T Buys T-Mobile, Deprives Desperate Sprint - 24/7 Wall St.

There's like a billion articles, this is the first one Google came up with.

I guess time will tell with this. Do two bad networks make a good network? I don't know.

This is not good. While a true monopoly may never take place here, we're essentially down to 3 major networks (with a bunch of wimpy MVNOs), and that's not exactly a good thing, in my opinion.

I was honestly hoping to see Sprint pick them up. Instead, we get the Death Star...

The problem with Sprint picking us up is that the networks are incompatible. What then? Have iDen, CDMA, AND GSM? Now THAT is scary.

Indeed. Sprint picking them up wouldn't have accomplished much.

I don't see the problem. T-Mobile wasn't exactly a major competitor in this market anyhow, right?

Well. ATT / T-mobile will have to take on a great deal of additional debt to fund the purchase. I wonder whom will have to pay back that debt? The customers of course.

It's the same with all the bank buy-outs. Their charges just keep going up.

Right. But the problem is, now that these few major companies are basically in charge, there's no one to threaten their business with lower prices.

Not really. I'm sure they'd find a way to merge it successfully.

They don't even have the same technical capabilities: much less interoperability.

Exactly. That would mean some extremely significant equipment changes.

It could mean a few different things.

#1. AT&T Could either become more competitive and drop prices and drive prices down across the board rate plan wise. Or it could be just the opposite and they raise prices because there's less competition and Verizon also could raise prices.

#2. AT&T's overpopulated network will gain the extra strength and stability it desperately needs by nearly doubling it's spectrum, especially in large cities.

#3. AT&T's LTE footprint at launch could be nearly double as T-Mobile is also been working on LTE, on same frequencies. AT&T's spectrum for LTE will also be doubled.

#4. AT&T will now have a larger customer base than Verizon. Which will put Verizon in second place for the first time in many years. Could force them to get more competitive.

This should give AT&T about 43% of the US Market.
BBC News - AT&T and T-Mobile create biggest US firm in $39bn deal

Besides Verizon, what makes up the other 57%?

Verizon IIRC is about 30 and Sprint about 20. The rest are taken up by MVNOs and smaller companies like MetroPCS and Boost mobile.

I was going to switch to T-mobile as well. guess it would be just the same as switching back to AT&T.

I thought Boost Mobile was part of Sprint?
