Indie has really come to mean, at least for some people, a kind of broad genre of music (sometimes separated into indie rock and indie pop). It has a very vague and complicated connection to the alt-rock, post-punk, lo-fi, and emo movements of the 80s and early 90s.
I could see an argument for liking indie music on principle even it just means unsigned or indie label status because it's associated with the DIY ethic. In other words, it's more likely the artists/bands are actually creating the music instead of simply performing it (as is the case with a lot of pop music).
