| Tone Test I've been working on a new track, but I can't decide which guitar tone I want to use for the rhythm... I've posted 5 clips of the main riff with different tones. Please tell me which one you like best. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJOu4UD_jZ4

| I dig 1 and 4 the most, but I voted 1.

Crunchy without being too saturated. It seemed to match the riff the best. |

| I vote #1, though it wouldn't be sad to hear it have a teensy bit more crunch . Not as much as the others, but a teensy bit more . But I really like it as it is, too. |

| #1 gets my vote for solo playing, but for playing with a band, might be a hair too warm. I would say #5 would be a little better to cut thru a heavy mix. But I like my tone to hedge on being slightly bright, so what do I know... |

| 1 and 2 have too much low end. 3 was good albeit a little bright/brittle.
4 and 5 seemed similar and a little dark and I would have actually liked to have heard bits of 3 (high end) and 4 (overall body) combined to make my choice, #6. |

| #1 by far. Its a rhythm part and should sit nicely in the mix. The eq can be tweaked to fit the song as bass, mid, and treble tend to be cumulative as you add other tracks. Less really is more on a rhythm track. |

| I like #4, with #1 as a very close second. Something in between them could be perfect.

Okay, here's the recording process... Each time I recorded a track, I used two mics: an Audio Technica Large Diaphragm Condenser (AT2020), and a Sennheiser e609 Dynamic. Each mic is panned far to one side and the other is panned in the opposite direction. Track 1 has two tracks of a "Dumble OD1 Clean Channel" based sound that is cranked to the max on the gain. Treble and mids are at about 3 o'clock, and bass is at about ten o'clock. Track 1 is doubled (Two tracks of two mics each).
Track 2 is based after a JCM 800 and has been my live tone for quite some time. I like that tone because it has a lot of punch and sounds more modern. The same doubling rule applies.
Track 3 is different because it uses the e609 recordings from both the Dumble sound and the JCM 800 sound. That tone has a bit more space to it, but doesn't have the tightness that I'd like.
Track 4 is a half-half treatment of tracks 1 & 2. It uses the dual mic treatment, but one take comes from the Dumble sound and the other comes from the JCM 800 sound.
Track 5 is tracks 1 & 2 combined
My tones are naturally very warm because I've found I can't hear my guitar on stage without some low end punch to help me hear over the drums.
Personally I'm split between 1, 2, and 5... I like track 1 as maybe an intro, but I'm thinking I'd keep track 5 as my main recorded tone. |
