Though a little difficult to obtain (it's not been released outside of Japan), if your friend/loved one could get Mother 3 set up for you, I'm sure you'd enjoy it. It's an RPG, but with a lot less of the repetitive battling and leveling up usually necessary, plus some unique features that make the battles actually fun. The story itself is amazing and told really well through the gameplay in a way other media simply couldn't accomplish, so I feel it's an excellent example of the worth of video games in general.

Thanks all for the suggestions! I picked up a couple of the lego games and decided to start with lego star wars. It's definitely more enjoyable than most of the games I've played before, but I haven't had a lot of time to play this week. After I finish that I'll try to obtain a few others and see how they go too.

@Jonodude, luckily, I'm going to Japan in June, so I'll keep an eye out for it

Thanks again everyone

Two words: Super Monkeyball. Seriously, best Gamecube/Wii game ever.
