Verizon iPhone

The Verizon iPhone -- Engadget
Like the current iPhone 4 except more CDMA and Verizon

Thoughts? I think it's about time, but I still wouldn't buy an iPhone.

And yes, all those times I said it would never happen? I was wrong. There.

Wireless hotspot is cool. Androids have had it for a while, but still nice to see. It will be interesting to see plan pricing..

pricing will probably be the same as or better than AT&T. the only downside is you can't use voice and data at the same time. but glad to see another carrier choice for iPhone (the best phone ever made )

Is the expectation for Verizon users to ditch their phones for the iPhone 4 even though Verizon sells 4G capable phones?

I do find it interesting that Apple is behind the curve on this on. For the past few years they've managed to stay as a wireless technology leader, but with this Verizon deal they're selling technology that's already behind what other companies are selling to the provider.

Eh not really surprising... 3G had been out for years, and they still waited until the second gen to introduce it.

That said, I'd be surprised if the next generation (presumably out in the summer) isn't 4g.

not necessarily true. the first iphone didn't have 3g when 3g phones were available. and no camera flash until iphone 4 when others had it sooner. honestly, 4g is so limited right now in scope of deployment that I don't see it being a big plus.

~40 large cities... 5-10mb/s and you don't see it as a big plus? Please elaborate.

I'd be interested to see what percentage of iphone owners are outside of Verizon's LTE network. As smart phone users in general (and iPhone users in particular) tend to lean towards less rural areas, I'd guess well over half.

Not trying to start a fight, but "limited" 4g is not the part I would choose to defend. I'd go with the battery life or something.

Or Apple wanting to keep the two phones virtually the same?

So I was curious.... Verizon Launches 4G LTE In 38 Major Metropolitan Areas By The End Of The Year

1/3rd of all Americans are covered by 4g right now (with more being added all the time).

Again, as I suspect the percentage of smart phone users will be much higher in the 38 large cities that are covered than rural areas or even smaller cities. Anyone have a heat map of iphone users? I'm willing to bet a large majority of current users are covered.

Granted there's still a lot of people not covered, but it's not like they can't use a 4g phone. It will just be on slower speeds until Verizon gets to their area.

Exactly. That's the reason 4g wasn't released today (to catch Verizon up to where AT&T is). But I do suspect it to be available in the summer with the next revision.

I just know a bunch of people in the Los Angeles area that skipped out on iPhones because they wanted to take advantage of the 4G networks set up in LA.

Either way, I'm sure Apple will sell a ton of these. Speed isn't a priority that tops having that logo on the back of your phone for a lot of people.

I'm due for an upgrade so I think i'm going to get it. I know it's probably gonna suck for the first few weeks due to too many people trying to access the network at the same time, but i love the iOS software. I've had the iTouch and my wife has an iPad, and we love them. I've been waiting a long time for the iPhone to come to Verizon.

My only dilemma was if I should wait for the iPhone 5 for the LTE network. I think i'm going to go ahead and get this one. haha

I know a bunch of folks in the same boat.

Personally, I am debating what phone to get next, but I think I like my android devices. (Galaxy Tab is at the top of my list currently) The reason I do not own one already is the whole 4g thing. I am not sure I won't wait for the second Galaxy Tab because I want the 4g. Granted, I want to see if Portland and Beaverton have 4g before I decide for certain, but for now, that has stopped me from upgrading.

I like high speed because... I use lots of data.

competition is good for everyone, I see this as a smart move for Apple. I won't get one, more of an android guy, but can recognize good technology when I see it.

Data, by the way, is a huge benefit of Verizon. It may be a bit slower than AT&T, but Verizon's 3G network is far broader. Also, Verizon still has unlimited data plans. People were grandfathered in with AT&T, but you can't get one now if you don't already have it.
