Your advice appears very solid. I've had some very strange noises in past when using the wrong power supply on things. I've also had things work 'apparently fine'.

I still think it might be worth naming the device and the supply in case of any prior experiences.

For example, Line 6 DL4 asks for 9V AC with a some really high load (can't remember the number), but still runs off the 'line 6' channels on my pedal power II, which supplies high load DC. It also can run off batteries so must be able to run off DC. If I recall it was listed on the Line 6 website as one of the power supplies they 'support' when I chose to buy one.
yeh, my understanding I think is that the DL4 and that whole series of pedals have internal rectifier circuitry, so it converts the AC from the power adapter to DC, so the pedal does actually run on DC, hence why it can use the batteries. Not sure why that's not done in the power adapter, but who knows....

True enough, I might as well list exactly what I'm talking about.

My device is the Digitech RP55 Modeling Guitar Processor, which wants 9vDC 300mA according to what is labeled under the power supply socket.

My power supply that I already own is the Dunlop ECB003 US AC Adaptor, which on the plug-in itself is labeled the following: I/P 120VAC 60hz 7W, O/P 9VDC 200mA.

Both devices also have a little diagram with three circles horizontally, one with a + sign, then one with a dot, then one with a - sign.

Hope that provides some insight.

... so that's

Dunlop ECB003 9vdc AC Adpater

centre negative (that's what the dots diagram is telling you), and it's regulated. So long as the fx unit calls for centre negative, you can't do any harm in trying. Really.
