| I like bright, clangy and long lasting strings. My favorites for most of my basses are Dean Markley SR2000 strings. There is nothing like them.
But, I currently use a Line 6 Variax 5 string bass, and last year switched to D'Addario Pro Steels. That bass was designed around D'Addario nickel strings, which I don't care for, but I thought D'Addario might produce better results than the Dean Markleys, and they did.
The Pro Steels are very different than the Dean Markleys. Not better, not worse...just different. I usually boil my strings when they start getting dull, and it had always worked, but not with the Pro Steels. Still, with my hand chemistry, I get about a year out of a set of strings, so I'm a happy camper.
I use Carvin branded Labella tape wounds on my fretless 5 and never change them. They sound the same new or 5 years old. If one broke I'd change them, but I haven't broken a string since the 70's. |
