| Unusual Christmas songs? Hi all
I'm trying to figure out what my band should play in an upcoming gig. It's a Christmas thing, with two other bands. We only have to play 4-5 songs, but there are only so many Christian Christmas songs that have been translated to a guitar-based version...I'm trying to make sure we don't end up stealing half of another band's set.
So, what are some Christmas songs that don't get played often, that would easily translate into a rock-ish version?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Then two female bears came out of the woods and tore up forty-two lads of their number. -2 Kings 2:23-24

| Sufjan Stevens - Hey Guys! It's Christmas Time
Sufjan's got a whole Christmas album (Songs for Christmas), and he does some unusual arrangements of traditional songs (Joy to the World, Come thou Fount) and original ones. Relient K has a Christmas album as well (Let it Snow Let it Reindeer/Deck the Halls Bruise Your Hand) that is basically rock versions of Christmas songs. Might be worth checking those out. |

| Starflyer 59 - A Holiday Song
I did it a while back with my band The Neverknown. It went pretty well. |

| I should probably note that it's a christian gig, and the church's "old people" will be there. :/
They don't mind distorted guitars or anything, but it has to be obviously related to the Christian holiday, not the secular one...

| You might want to check out the Relient K Deck the Halls (bruise your hand) album. I'm sure at least 2 or 3 of those songs would be useable. I forget if they have any slow stuff on that one, but keep your ear out for it if you wanna impress the old ppl in your congregation. Good luck!

| Do mewithoutYou's "A Stick, a Carrot, and a String". It has some Christmas themes in it.
Check out the Happy Christmas albums Volumes 1 - 5. There are some good options there.

| This Child by Glenn Kaiser, from Ripley County Blues
Go here and you can hear a sample of it.
I couldn't find the full version online. But the album is a good one, and so is the song.

| I know Christmas 2010 has long gone, but I just wanted to add a couple of comments for those who are always looking for some "different" Christmas music.
There was an album in 1995 from a label called Projekt by the title of "Excelsis - A Dark Noël" which featured artists like Eva O(with Eric Clayton from Saviour Machine), Thanatos, loveliescrushing, etc. It is Christmas music in a darkwave/electronic/gothic vein. Projekt has released a couple more "Dark Noël" albums with different songs/artists... and more "Excelsis" albums...
Also, August Burns Red(hardcore band) put out three Christmas songs, "Carol of the Bells," "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel," and "Little Drummer Boy," all with a hardcore sound, but no vocals. |
