they actually had a tuner in the acoustic room last time I was there. Plus, numerous solidstate amps have onboard tuners, and a lot of acoustic/electric guitars have their own tuner as well now. Getting harder for GC to leave 'em untuned, or tune a halfstep down.

Guitar shops sometimes tune their guitars lower to make them seem easier to play. It's a little trick you should be wary of.

Well, the GC WHERE I go doesnt tune their guitars. They take them out of the boxes and hang them up.

I tune my rock band guitars to Eb all the time and drop the low string to C#/Db. no problems, but you need 11's to keep the tension kind of snappy.

I tried detuning my Acoustics and I'm not a fan. The brilliance disappears. Then again..... I don't like acoustic guitars much anyways...
