I agree on the Jet City being a solid low cost alternative but the SLO is one of the real killers out there.
I prefer Bruce Zinkys stuff to Mike Soldanos myself but it's apples to oranges when you get into this class of amp! I have played several of these amps at length and would love to snag a SLO at some point if I ever have some $$ to burn.
I want a Zinky MOFO or Superfly to go with my Velvet and Prosonic first though.
Bruce Zinky's stuff does the same thing Bill. Are the Soldanos also set up for using rack gear in the loop at line level like Bruce sets his stuff ?? Why do all these heavyweight amp builders set this stuff up like this I wonder?
Try a Zinky MOFO of Superfly some time and see what you think I prefer the fees of Bruces stuff it even more dynamic that the Soldanos. Both are world class and there are few other amps that will give each a run head to head. YouTube - zinky superfly |
I have played a zinky actually. Nice amp, great amp, but not what I was after.
As guitarists, we all chase that sound. For me, that sound IS the SLO, so for me it is just my favorite. This may sound strange, but I have sort of quit looking for amps since buying it. I mean, I still pick up the occasional clean amp or flip a vintage, but with that and a mesa rect-o-verb and a frenzel wildcat I am pretty much done looking. IMO, the rect o verb has this sweet clean and a great mesa crunch which provides a different flavor of high gain.
I think the thought was this. When the SLO was designed rack gear was still your high end gear. And to an extent, that is sort of true now. I think that is why
