Kapoosh

Anyone have any helpful opinion on the Kapoosh knife blocks? Earlier this year my wife got me some nice kitchen knifes and I really need to get them out of the drawer where they're being dulled up. I'm not a big fan of germy wooden knife blocks, and I have no room for a magnetic strip. These seem like a good option, but I've read a few back reviews of the plastic rods breaking off.

Here's the talk on it from a site I generally consider quite reliable:

hmmm....mostly positive reviews from those commenting on it....one guy had an idea about using rice. That could be interesting. Might be messy though.

Wow. After checking that out, I kind of want to get one for my Mom.

I just went to walmart and bought an interesting looking rectangular canistar with enough height for my chef's knife (the longest one I've got short of the bread knife) and a ton of rice. I figure I'll make that work then put a kapoosh on my christmas list. It seems like a good gift to get from a mother in law.

I just use knife guards and keep mine in a drawer. Not that any of my knives are nice enough for that, but still, I have them so I use them. Here's an article that talks about some good ones. I have the kind he complains about at the beginning. Ha.

Here's basically what I cam up with. With the glass canister and all that rice it's pretty heavy, so I'm not to worried about it tipping over. You can see the blade sticks out a bit on the chef's knife. Total cost was about 9 dollars. This will work til I get something better.

Do the knives slide in easily? It seems the random alignment of the kernels would cause a problem.

They slip right in, no problems. It's very fluid. I have noticed a little bit of rice starch on them when I pull them out. This doesn't really bother me too much, but it can be easily wiped off.

i've been thinking about something better myself, but I want to go magnetic, it's just a matter of where to put it.

The Kapoosh knife holder is a unique new system to hold any knife any time, no need to find a specific slot to slide knife into. The Kapoosh utilizes fredom rods, which allow you to mix and match kitchen knives form different sets and to store practically any utensil easily - anywhere in the block. Plus the rods keep your knives sharper by eliminating the potential of scraping blades on the edges of traditional knife block sets. These rods are removable and dishwasher safe. Just place the freedom rods on the top rack of your dishwasher for cleaning. This Kapoosh has a woodgrain exterior.
