I would argue it's pretty crucial. You can get away without, but if you're using a lot of dotted eighth's rhythm, the delay is generally pretty high in the mix, and so the alignment is kinda important. now if you're using it for a warm analog delay slapback or something similar, it's not important...

Easiest 'The Edge' sound I've come up with is using two delay pedals. Currently I use a DD5 on dotted 8th (tap) and a DD7 on modulation 1/4 setting (just like the slight chorus sound), again with tap.

It's quite easy to tell if the two are in sync as it gives that delay 'slap' when you tap the strings.

Cheaper ways to get the right sound but IMO the quickest and most effective is something like the above.

Hmm, I'm gonna disagree. The easiest Edge sound to get is just using a straight dotted-eighth. He definitely does use the dual 1/8th & 1/4 sound, but his sound is easiest to duplicate just with the single disagree
