I reject your traditional route!

So, I'm just old enough to be considered a non-traditional student. On the upside, I don't have to attend nearly as many chapel services at my college; on the downside, I'm faced with such challenges as biting my tongue when I hear freshmen say things like, "That John Mayer song, 'Free Fallin.''"

I've also found that I'm a much, much better student this go-around.

You know what sucks? Free Fallin' is pretty much the only Tom Petty song that I like. I like John Mayer. And John Mayer's version SUCKS.

Brick in the wall by Corn rocks. Someone did a remake of Tears for Fears Shout. I think it was disturbed and I dig that version too.

I took two years of community college in my mid 30's. That was a very interesting experience. Being a community college I was not the only student that was older than the 18-24 demographic, but I was usually the oldest by a few years. Closer in age to most of the teachers than I was to most of the students.

Yeah, it was Disturbed that re-made the song. I think they called it "Shout 2000" and it's on "The Sickness."

Anyway, I'm not a "non-traditional" student, but we have plenty of those at my college. In fact, I believe the average age of students here is 25 or so. I've noticed that pretty much every non-traditional student I know or have come in contact with is a very, very good student. I'm not sure why this is, but I suspect that perhaps the older we get, the more seriously we take things like school. Especially if we know we cannot afford to fail because we need to graduate ASAP and aren't able to delay graduation like a younger person would.

My logic is that I moved my family halfway across the state, so I had better be able to justify it with good grades.

In grad school there's a much greater diversity of ages than I noticed in undergrad...we've had people as young as 22 in my program, and as old as 60 something.

In the lab I teach, I usually have a handful of students significantly older than me. They tend to sit near the front, ask a lot of questions, have a great handle on the math component of the course, but struggle with the computing.

I know if I could go back and redo my undergrad knowing what I know now, I'd do a lot of things differently.
