Makes the high peaks lower and the low bits a bit louder. In other words it reduces the dynamics.

And aurally that translates into a more even sound with less dynamic variation and more sustain

It squishes your dynamic range.

On guitar, it often makes your bass notes a bit less powerful and the higher ones stand out a bit more consistently.
