Something I always try to make sure I know before hand (either by contacting the seller or just by knowing in my head) is what serial number range the instrument should be in. For example, if a guy is calling a MIM Telecaster a 2005 model and it has a MN5x serial number, then I know by looking at it that it's actually a 1995 and the seller didn't do his research. That gives me some room to haggle since the guitar is a decade older than he/she advertised it as being.
Of course, when it comes to other brands (Gibson/Epiphone) I don't know their serial conventions as well.
