| I switched to 5's exclusively in 1988. My first was a 34" scale with a narrow neck. That got modded into a 35" scale fretless which I still have.
My other basses are of varying widths. I play a Line 6 Variax 5 most, and the spacing is fairly wide...same as a Lakland. But over the years, it matters less and less. 34" or 35", narrow or wide. As long as the bass is well set up, with comfortable "rolled" edges, not too flat of a radius, I adjust to it very quickly.
I had a Hipshot D tuner on my last 4 string, and when I found I was using it tuned to D most of the time, I figured a 5 would be the next logical step. Now when I play a 4 string, it feels like I have a finger missing. If I had to play only a 4 string, I'd go B-E-A-D.
A 5 gives me more of what I play bass for. |
