i read a study a while ago to which i don't have any links, which probably doesn't matter too much anyways in this thread. =)

the main idea of the study is that "light" people (scandinavians and other northern europeans) need milk/dairy to thrive, whereas "dark" people (middle eastern, mediterranean, african, asian, islanders..basically everyone not northern european) don't do well with milk or other dairy at all. it has to do with the amount of sunlight that comes into your ancestral region or something like that.

who knows how true it is or is not.

all i know is that just about every middle eastern person i know, myself included, can handle goat or sheep's milk, but has a whole lot of trouble with dairy. my mom, who is swedish-descent, needs a cup of milk a day to feel like she's functioning properly. apparently i didn't inherit that from her.

That is really interesting. I definitely thrive a bit more with milk.

I think this had something to do with the amount of vitamin D you take in. The sun gives you vitamin D ( right? ) or something that allows you to absorb vitamin D. Also, milk nowadays has vitamind D added to it (you can check the ingredients, it least mine does). Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin (there are only four, vitamins A, D, E, and K) meaning that you don't excrete all of the extra vitamin D you take in (say you take in 300% of your vitamin C value, well, you really only absorb 100% of that, the rest you pee out. if you take in 300% of vitamin D, you absorb all 300% of it). From what I know, taking in fat soluble vitamins (vitamins A, D, E, and K) in overly excessive amounts can cause you to become overnourished (like the opposite of being malnourished). I don't exactly know what happens, but becoming overnourished isn't good and it can even cause you to die.

Anyways, the way that this would make sense is that people in Scandanavian countries and Northern Europe either live in climates where they are not in the sun very often so they don' t get a lot of sun and thus not very much vitamin D, so taking in a lot of vitamin D is a good thing. Also, people like myself of northern europe descent have pretty fare skin so we try not to get a lot of sun. Other people from other climates (like, anywhere else in the world) get a lot of sun and don't have to worry about how much they get due to their skin tone.

With that said, I highly doubt that if you take in sun regularly and drink milk three times a day, that you will have any problems. I read what you said and this seems like a logical conclusion. I don't have any sources because this thread doesn't seem to require any, I'm just an AP bio student who thinks (or hopes) he knows stuff. Don't quote me .

I have been a doctor for over 35 years and several things have surfaced in that time.
Excesses of anything probably are not very good for you.
Opinions in medicine change directions frequently just like the wind.
Nuts with their opinions are often published.
Whole milk is very high in fats. Young children, in brain developement, need a substantial amount of fat.
I did have a young teenage son of a farmer that drank milk from the cow and was obese. He was drinking 8-10 glasses of milk a day and wanted to lose weight. we decreased his milk to 3 glasses a day and he lost 50# over the next 6 months.
Adults gain a lot less benifit from milk than growing children do. If you are and adult skim milk is probably a better option.

While some may find it gross...I love skim milk.

My wife hates skim, but I can't really tell a difference between it and two percent. I guess it just doesn't bother me.
