Burning the Quran

Muslims, the First Amendment, and another bad idea | Kyle Wingfield

There's plenty of articles covering this...I just linked the first one. I saw this on the news this morning. Not sure how much discussion is needed as I'm sure everyone here will think this is a bad idea, I'm just wondering if ya'll have heard about it. US military leaders and politicians are expressing real concern over the safety of our troops and citizens abroad and the Black Panthers are kind of threatening retribution if the church goes forward with this.

Without betraying too much of my aggravation with said church in FL, this is a horrendous idea, especially when I look at the fact that I have family and buddies still in Afghanistan that could receive retribution for such a stupid act.

Who in his right mind ever thought burning books --- especially religious books --- helped anything?

Interestingly, apparently the legitimacy of this place as an actual church is in question: Church will burn Qur'an on 9/11 | Michael Tomasky | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk

They have every right to burn it if you ask me. Would I do it? No. But I wouldn't burn an American flag either.

Learning from history is stupid.

Frankly I'd rather see almost anything else in terms of protest-

Whether the book is crap or not, or has good or bad philosophy is irrelevant. Books hold intrinsic value as part of the human expression, and what they can teach us.

Fahrenheit 451 should be required reading IMO.

I support their right to burn it, and my right to view them as idiots for doing so.

It serves no purpose. There was book burning in the New Testament as a sign of repentance. If, say an Imam converted and burnt his books, that would be a different matter akin to the burning of magic texts in Acts.

This is simple sensationalism and politics.

I have burnt a few books, but never publicly.

From their facebook page:

"On September 11th, 2010, from 6pm - 9pm, we will burn the Koran on the property of Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, FL in remembrance of the fallen victims of 9/11 and to stand against the evil of Islam. Islam is of the devil!"

I propose an alternative event -- on September 11th, 2010, from 6pm - 9pm, we will kill doves in order to stand against the evil of the Dove World Outreach Center. Logically, the two make comparable sense.

Also, if this is being done under the guise of remembering the victims of 9/11, what of the many Muslims who lost friends and family members during the terrorist attacks? Is this supposed to comfort them?

Exactly.

I burned my copy of The Satanic Bible years ago...but that's the only book I can think of that I knowingly torched.

The mormons at my school used to be very aggressive. I took their mormon bibles and literature they practically forced on me and used them for kindling. I needed kindling for the wood stove and they provided it... I have found porn a few times and consigned it to fire.

I actually commented on their blog. These people are justifying the actions with that scripture, as Bill said, but the problem is that it was new converts destroying that stuff, not the older Christians. I compared them to the Roman Catholic church of pre-reformation, burning books and persecuting those who didn't follow their beliefs.

I was going to read that, but all the copies at the library had been burnt in a campfire. What's it about :P

I want to write a book that inspires millions of people to burn it... that means I'll sell millions of copies.

Then *they* are buying millions (or producing them... either way I'm owed royalties).

The title of my book "Burn my book: That'll teach me a lesson"

I'd buy it. Sounds inflammatory.

Someone I know just posted a remarkable response to this. He is someone working in intelligence in Afghanistan...
