What's a reaper (DAW)?

And does the M-audio come with software? And if not, what do you recommend. A guy I used to know works at sweetwater music in Ft.Wayne and he's trying to sell me on an M box II Mini with the full version of pro tools. I'm worried that a full version would be over my head, but then I'm also worried about something of lesser quality just sounding like garbage.

Thank you for the list though, and I will definitely take it into consideration.

Reaper is the software. DAW is short for Digital Audio Workstation, which applies to most audio recording software.
