Having heard a guitarist play an entire set with flanger set to dominating, I don't want it anywhere near my rig.
Chorus just makes me think 50 year old with a strat (I may have a strat copy, but I'm only half that age).
It'll probably take me a lot of persuading to move beyond wah, trem and (very) occasional delay.

Also, I've decided that I only want overdrive/boost pedals that I've built myself, although that isn't ruling out an effect per-say.

And what's so bad about a 50 year old with a strat?

I understand what you are saying about the 50 year old with a strat, I have experienced this. Older guys think of the kid who shows up on the worship team with an LTD or ESP, same difference really just reversed rolls, LOL, no big deal just each generation seems to have certain things about it. Uh like the volume knob, older guys use it, younger guys use volume pedals, mostly anyways.

On the Flanger thing I understand exactly where you are coming from, and totally respect your opinion, but they can be used very tastefully and musically, also very ambiently, the key is moderation, very slow time, not to deep on the depth, maybe not to high on the mix, a good subtle effect, not overbearing or gross. Very not VANHALEN LOL

I wanna know why you guys are so ready to discount effects. You don't know what you'll be playing in 10 years, at least I certainly don't. I never thought I'd have a delay on my board, but I never ruled it out and now I have one (albeit built into this really cool effect that uses it in a completely weird fashion). I'm not gonna say that I'll never own a metal distortion, or a flanger, or a phaser, or a vibe, I don't particularly need them now, but who knows in a few months or years?

I guess what this question ended up being for most of us really was "what kind of pedal do you have no use for... right now."

You're right, right now I really have no use for a vibe but I guess maybe I'll find a really sweet use for one in ten years, I don't really know.

I won't say 'never' on any pedal. However, I can't see myself needing a phaser, flanger, or pedal like that in the near future.

Nothing wrong with a 50 year old with a strat, it's just that it's not me.

But more to the point with chorus, all too often it becomes the defining feature of a guitarists sound, and I just happen to have most commonly observed this with ~50 year olds with strats. With modulation effects, I'm of the mind that subtlety is key - if you can hear it without listening closely there's too much there. Either that or use a more extreme setting but have it as a sometimes pedal rather than an all the time pedal.

I used to have a flanger... I think (the purple Boss pedal?)...when I first started out playing electric. I didn't really know how to use any effects, but I made the worst use of that one

For now, I'd say that I'll probably never get a fuzz...I've always used OD's and Distortions...even when I'm playing with my XTL, I can't get a fuzz to sound good

Right now the two things I have no use for are overdrive pedals and volume pedals

I seriously can't think of a pedal I haven't had on my board at one time or another over the years... Everything has it's place and it's use. I love fuzz of all types, flange, chorus, phasers, filters, univibes, wah, tremolo, delay, echo, reverb... To me they're all just new colors to add to the palate. Plus you never know what particular effect a gig is going to call for.

I'm open to any effect....I feel like if i had weird effects like whammys, univibes, flangers, and P.O.G.'s i would definitely wanna use them.

This is a good way to acheive new sounds, and scare people!! haha
