If you have the time and means, I'd recommend thinking about getting certified as a lifeguard. The classes and training process takes a while, but then the certification opens you up to job openings that most people (including adults) aren't qualified for, so there's much less competition. And they usually pay decently too.

Step 1. Pray.
Step 2. Keep looking.

I'm 18 and I have a pseudo-part-time job, in that I only get to work when I'm called in (which isn't very often). My parents are Pastors living off their "salaries" and my youth allowance (a sort of government hand-out for students). God has given us more than enough to get by (and considering how little that is, I'm rather impressed with God).

In short: unless there's a REAL need for a job (i.e. you need to make ends meet with your own rent), don't fret and just be patient.

But he was pierced for our transgressions
He was crushed for our iniquities;
The punishment that brought us peace was upon him,
And by his wounds we are healed.

Then I strongly iterate steps 1 and 2.

Try looking in shops that aren't necessarily chains (such as small pet shops, smaller restaurants, etc.). Even volunteer work may be a step to gaining experience that may get you employment elsewhere.

As it is, I finish high school this year (my final exams are less than 2 months away). I have no idea what God wants me to do, and there is no way my family is going to be able to do anything to get me through uni.

I'm not fussed. I don't know what I want to do, let alone what God wants. I tell you now, pray, pray, pray. If God wants you to go to medical school, He will get you the means.
