OK. I am probably just stupid but ......

I installed ubuntu from a cd. Now that it is installed, it doesn't seem to recognize the cd-rw. Anyone have a clue?

Does it not recognize the drive itself, or the CD in the drive?

It doesn't even find the drive. I have a Floppy 0 and File System.

Firstly: No, OO is not 100% compatible with MS-O.. at least not as of 6 months ago.

Yes, the files will read (usually), but the formatting can be *very* different.

Depends on how the file's structured. Obviously, if you were going to do a power point or have something pretty looking, you wouldn't chance it with the OO <-> MS conversion (unless you really had to).

But I've found simple DOC (and even DOCX's) actually convert pretty well in the latest release.

That would be another way to say "not 100%", yes.

My resume (not a spot to get too fancy) converted poorly when I last tried it about 6 months ago.

^ this.

I've had to completely recode excel macros to be compatible with OO Calc.

The latest release can actually handle it pretty well. Pretty basic stuff anyway, for sure (such as tables). Though, I can't say I've tried anything whacky with it (clip art, pretty posters (and yes, there ARE people who do use Word for that sort of thing), etc.).

If you believe the insertion of clip-art is something other than "extremely basic", then you and I are on very different levels of use.

Even something as simple as my resume is dependent upon text boxes, multiple rulers, section breaks and the like: never mind a proper technical book. OO screws all the alignments and breaks.

When I can write brick-breaker in excel (can be done) and import it into OO and it runs: I'll call it "fully compatible". When I can at least import a multi-column, multi-section manual, I'll call it "mostly compatible".

Until then, and in my experience: it correctly imports the text, but severely damages the formatting.

Noted, but I'm telling you that you should at least try the latest version and see if there are issues.

I will take a peek if I get a chance. Right now, there's not enough up-side to pursue, as I no longer have a LINUX box up, and my windows boes are happy running office.
