I was thinking about becoming your FB friend just so I could know what this magical bass was for sure.

It's been at fedex since 8:40 AM yesterday. At first it said "Barcode label unreadable and replaced" on the tracking site, then at 8:45 it switched to just "Arrived at Fedex location"

I have no idea why it wasn't delivered yesterday, but it should be today. I'm going to call them in the morning and see if I can just come get it, as I will be in the area.

In the morning I have a doctors appointment, then I'll hopefully grab it, come home, have about 10 min to myself and after that I am off to Folk Fest for the entire day, so I won't really be able to play it until the following day. But if I have time to plug it in quickly I'll post my initial feelings once I'm home from the fest.

It's here, it's here, it's here!
Pictures later, can't find my camera. But it looks way better in person then it did in the photos I saw, so I doubt I'm going to refinish it.

I like the feel of the neck, but it needs a major setup.

Sound? Weird, but it's weird good, methinks.
It's very different then any bass I have, so it will take a few days or longer to really get it and form an opinion on whether I like it or not. It's got a weird midrange to it that I think I could make sound great with a GE-7, but unfortunately I sold mine.
I also set up most of my basses so I can really dig in, but I can't on this bass. Featherlight touch is the key. Unfortunately I don't have one.
Anyway. Back to playing!

Oh...and it's a '76 Musicmaster!
Here is a picture taken by the owner before the last. I'll try to get one that is more true to how it looks tomorrow

Is that a mahogany body and neck with a rosewood fingerboard? I bet that sounds pretty dang creamy, especially with flatwounds.

It's a rosewood fingerboard, I have no idea on the body.
The body could be poplar, ash, or alder depending on who I ask. I don't know enough about wood grain to tell.
Several owners ago (at least three, maybe more) a terrible refinish was done to it.
It's blotchy, it's weird and just all over the map. In the pictures I didn't like it, but in hand it's pretty funky actually. I've decided to keep it.

Also, I'm now officially in love with it.
I threw my diamond compressor in front of the amp so I could get a good volume with the gain down, then I rolled off the tone knob on the bass and suddenly everything changed. I have THE sound.
So stoked.

mine has a stock finish, but I guarantee its uglier. It's a '77 and someone converted it to a 5 string at some point. Instead of drilling a string hole, they shot it. With a gun. So mine has a bullet hole in the headstock, the finish flakes off the neck and the body has major chunks of poly missing. I have a new pickguard on mine with a mini-humbucker, but I also have the original pickguard tucked away.

Wow.
How does the mini-humbucker sound?

I'm freaking loving this bass. I can honestly get a more accurate Jamerson sound out of it then I could with my custom built '62 p-bass, loaded with a fralin pickup would to '62 specs and done up with flats. Crazy.

I've also decided to refinish it. I'm thinking sonic blue with white pick guard..maybe tort.
Thoughts?

Actually, not thinking clear, its a single coil size BL L45 humbucker. It sounds very much like the stock pickup with no noise.

Sonic blue with white/black/white would be cool. Tortoise would look a little weird IMO.

Sonic blue sounds awesome! Though I dig the way it looks now. Kinda looks like furniture or something, haha.

This negatively affected my tone in ways that I just can't describe.
Then, on a whim, a few years ago I wandered into a Bath and Body Works store at a local mall and picked up some of their gentle foaming anti-bacterial hand cleansers.
The difference in my guitar's sound is so wickedly improved that I no longer feel the need to buy a new amp or pedals or even strings...EVER!
So, it's my belief that tone is in the soap.
Thank you and goodnight.
