1. Les Paul
2. Jimi Hendrix
3. Tony Iommi
4. Eddie Van Halen
5. Joe Satriani

These were all the 'grandfathers' in one form or fashion of electric guitar.

Just to clarify, the original question in this thread was to name the guitarists who have most influenced you personally, not the most influential guitarists in general

To clarify, I would not change my answer much. Even when I mention saxophone players , I played saxophone way back in high school for 6 years. I listened to Jazz sax a lot back then. It real influenced my guitar style and my harmonica playing.

I would put Robert Johnson, near the top of the list. It was because I first heard him that I learned slide guitar. Through him I discovered Open tunings. Then I went to discover all these other blues musicians.

BB King, maybe most influences my playing in standard tuning when I am playing lead licks. I can't play good as like BB King, but I am thinking along that sweet style he has.

Then I play finger-style stuff and I guess I first heard that from guys like Bruce Cockburn ( pronounced Coburn).

Wow that's an old list.

Currently, my list would probably have Spanky Alford way at the top.

I wish I was SRV or Clapton clone...but I just don't have it in me.

My list hasn't changed much but I'd add:

Jeff Lynne
John Fogerty
Mike Campbell
George Harrison

Warren Haynes
Neil Young
Two of the Kings (BB and Freddie)
Dickey Betts
Eric Clapton

Also in the running: David Gilmour, Jerry Garcia, Robin Trower and Duane Allman.

While these are what I would say are my original influences, they are some of my favorites along with Jonny Lang, Angus Young, John Bonamassa, Derek Trucks and the list goes on.

If Patrick Stump has influenced you then cool, but I don't think he's really been around and had enough impact to be "influential", isn't most of his stuff just power chord heavy punk rhythms anyways?

And if you can play Brian May's stuff and EVH and Kirk Hammet, you must practice, a lot. Also, I really need to practice more, lol.

I might be reviving a dead thread (i did not look at the op post date) but here are my five.

Steve howe (biggest influence both in tone and playing)
alex lifeson
Roy buchanan
Eric clapton
Robert fripp

I am also influenced by other instruments, like bassists such as chris squire. In fact, i once tried arranging"the fish" for guitar and drums, but it didn't work.

Strangely enough, i am also influenced my the drummer bill bruford, as well as some sax players. Sadly, bruford retired a while ago, so i won't be able to see him live.

That's pretty much mine, couldn't stop at 5. It's a really different list for me than my top 5, but to write off Kansas would be a travesty, even though I would never really call them one of my top or favorite bands, and I don't listen to Skynyrd really much anymore, but when I first started playing all I wanted to learn was Newsboys, Skynyrd and Nirvana.

Jimmy Page and Billy Barbot, however are the biggest influences on my current music. I'm not saying I'm anywhere talented like Page, but the style and the chords that he used, I use a lot. Songs like Kashmir and When the Levee Breaks have influenced me tremendously.

Honorable mentions:

Kim Thayil
Jerry Cantrell
The guy from Cursive
Tommy Iommy
Kirk Hammet
I feel like George Thorogood should be somewhere on this list now. I don't know how much Jody Davis and the Kansas guys are influencing me anymore. Tommy Iommy is also right off this list.
