| It's like I CAN TOUCH THE MUSHROOM!- Nintendo's 3DS I'm surprised nobody's started this thread already.
So according to the specs, it's going to be a pretty powerful little portable (able to go toe to toe with the PSP from what I hear), it already has a mountain load of third party support behind it and then there's that trivial little tidbit about displaying three dimensional graphics without the use of silly glasses or something
Personally, I am very intrigued and excited about all the possibilites this new handheld has the potential for, and everybody who got some hands-on time with one at E3 last week confirmed that the 3D effects are really spectacular. I haven't bothered with the handheld market since I got a Gameboy Color....but I very well may pick this up whenever it drops next year.
Thoughts? Nintendo E3 Network | Nintendo 3DS

| It uses what's called a parallax barrier to created the 3D effect without special glasses. It works great for a small portable screen like the 3DS' because you can keep it in the "sweet spot" where the visual trickery will have it's greatest effect. As far as comparisons to Sony's PSP, it's certainly more powerful but it doesn't look quite as good because the hardware is rendering two versions of the game, one for each eye. Either way, it's an apparent step above the DS, with or without the 3D.
I have a few concerns. The biggest for me is how well the design will accommodate left-handed players. We cannot operate the "Slide Pad" (that's what Nintendo is calling the analog nub) and use the stylus at the same time. Maybe it won't be a big deal but the potential for problems is there. Another thing is that some people are reporting headaches and eyestrain with the 3DS. It's probably not an issue for most people but it would suck if you couldn't even bear to look at the screen for very long.
I am kind of excited about it even though I am not usually a big fan of portable gaming. They say that this sucker is going to be $200+. It will sell like hotcakes of course.

| Good point about the slide pad- I hadn't thought about how it might affect you lefties. That said, I wonder if the stylus is going to play a lesser role in 3DS software then it has with the original DS. They seem to be downplaying it in favor of showing off the new analogue controls, of course most of what's been shown so far have been videos and simple tech demos. But I do see what you mean and the potential for some issues down the line is definitely there.
I haven't heard any reports about people getting headaches or eyestrain, but I'm not surprised to learn that they're out there, and I'll be very surprised (and impressed) if there aren't many more complaints like that as the gaming media gets more hands-on time with the device closer to release. However, I was listening to a podcast on IGN earlier today and they briefly mentioned that one of their editors with an astigmatism couldn't make out the 3D effects at all. Again, that probably won't be an issue for most people, but it will be a potential issue for a system that boasts 3D graphics as it's biggest hook.
Absolutely this thing is going to move merchandise. Still, I can't help but wonder how they're going to effectively advertise it during the first big marketing push.

| It looks pretty good, the gaming lineup so far is stunningly good. GameSpot Forums - Nintendo DS - Pictures of 3DS announced games (56k!) UPDATED
At least for me, Nintento is pretty much forcing me to buy this thing due to the gaming lineup. Though I might have to wait for a re design, because I would have never gotten a original DS if I new the Lite was coming out. Similar thing with the PSP 2000 compared to the original. I'm not one to wait for the 4th re design or anything, but I will probably wait for the 1st re design. Because I've almost always regretted buying something like this the day it comes out only to have a way better re design come out not too far after. |

| This actually interests me. I wonder if it will still play Game Boy Advance games, how the battery life will be, and what software it will ship with.
I was also intrigued by some of the specs.. it apparently features one inside camera and two on the outside of the system. I don't know what purpose the two on the outside could serve. Maybe to add some new gameplay elements? There is also an internal gyroscope and it has the ability to sense motion. Very cool.
I'm pretty curious to see how this ends up looking, especially how the 3D looks. The titles that have already announced are nothing short of Kick-a**. |

| The two cameras on the back are actually one. Two lenses to take 3D photos. |

The titles that have already announced are nothing short of Kick-a**. | There's no GBA slot, so if you could play GBA games, it would be through some kind of download store, though you'd probably have to buy the games all over again, even if you already own the physical copy. And the two camera lenses on the front are so you can take "3D" pictures. Though I have no idea what exactly these kind of pictures would look like. It seems to be a new technology though, so it's not something any other camera has.
My biggest concern with the camera is that the megapixel count will be low like the DSi. The DSi had a laughable .3 megapixels for both of the cameras. Which completely ruined it for me. I'm not expecting 10 megapixels or anything, but it needs to be a lot higher than .3.
Here's some general info on the 3DS and specs if anyone's interested. I'm really stoked about it, though again, most likely I'll wait for a re design. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_3DS |

There are probably a few other major titles I'm blanking on at the moment..
The 3D pictures the camera takes are supposedly pretty amazing.

| So, the price was revealed for the Japanese market: ¥25,000
That translates to slightly more than $300 US.
So, does that dampen anyone's enthusiasm? Will you be an early adopter or wait for a price drop? Or will you wait for a future iteration of the 3DS?
