my dad was telling me that he's had his phone for 8 days and on average drops at least two calls a day. Now admittedly at&t isn't perfect where we are (but pretty good, i've got 5 bars right now), and he does spend a lot of time on the phone. In his defense he doesn't death grip it either so...

For what it's worth, I can't remember the last time I actually dropped a call with the 3g, in an area where there was actually service in the first place.

I would like to check out the bumpers though, if they're nice it may not be too bad. I ran my 3g case free from 8/2008 until 3/2010 when I got concerned about dropping it a few times I have to be honest and say that I absolutely hate the feel of the phone (3g) in a case. so much better without.

For what it's worth, this was an interesting track for Apple to take, and I think without traditional media outcry (more than just the salty internet nerds on blogs, who steve jobs reputedly hates)- they wouldn't have bothered, as the original 'you're holding it wrong' messages seem to attest.

I don't know if any of you guys were apple users in the mid nineties, but there were other instances of things that didn't even come close to 'it just works' and users were basically told to go and stuff it where the sun don't shine.

It's also possible that apple's reasoning for actually doing something is that their stock took a $9.9bil hit yesterday.

To admit that there's a problem. Which they repeatedly denied throughout the press conference today. They even played videos that showed "other smartphones have this problem... er... issue.... er... thing... too"

He admitted to a problem and apologized for it, but he made sure to very thoroughly let everyone know how wrong they were to single out his product. We could've done without that because frankly, no one cares. In the end we're still getting free bumper cases. Apple did pretty well to do this. Steve Jobs could've done better. But whatever, it's settled.

Here's the quote of the day from Jobs “We love our users so much we’ve built 300 apple retail stores for them.”

Jobs was incredibly defensive the entire presentation. This is honestly the first time my confidence in Apple has been shaken.
Why has your confidence been shaken?

You know. I don't get this. I got my iPhone 4 on the second date of launch. I can also replicate the "death grip"issue. But you know what's more surprising? I can ALSO replicate the death grip issue on my iPhone 3GS... and my father in law's Samsung Eternity... and my cousin's android phone... This has been a complete hoop-la created by media only because it's so easy to replicate.

Jobs brought out some pretty impressive numbers. 1 dropped calls out of 100 calls. That's great compared to the older iphones! I live in a poor service area (It's so bad that I have to step outside to make phone calls.) and my iPhone 4 has been the first AT&T phone I've owned that was able to make phone calls within my house, only dropping calls 3 times in the 20 something days I've owned it. My girlfriend STILL can not make phone calls on her cell phone, and on my 3GS I still have issues when switched back to it to test it out. (note also, my iP4 is bare. No case.) Also, with less than half return rates than the 3GS and what was it? less than 1% (I might be wrong, but it was incredibly low) calls to Apple support about reception?

Jobs is completely right that this is being blown completely out of proportion. I'm speaking from my personal experience with the phone, and also being able to replicate the SAME EXACT ISSUE with almost any cell phone once you can locate the antennae location on the phone.

Then when a company offers a completely penalty free exchange for almost 3 months, or a free case (From even 3rd party companies taking a loss!), people are STILL complaining. All I can say to those people is, if you don't like the phone, return it, and go back to your other handset that has the SAME EXACT PROBLEM.

I guess it's just impossible to make some people happy. Or maybe they're just happy seeing a flaw in a company that's successful.

What could he have done better? Recalled every iPhone even though a very small minority actually experienced the problem to a degree that would make them want to contact support or return the phone? If a case fixes the problem, then that would be the easiest and cheapest solution.

Hey so the iphone is released tomorrow here in Canada. I'm thinking of lining up to get it first thing in the morning (hopefully only missing an hour or 2 of work)!

I waited in line at about 6:30 am this morning, where only one person was there. There were about 10 people lined up by the time it opened (and about 400-500 at the apple store I've heard), and I got one of the 4 32 gb models they had in stock. Worth it I think.
