Yeah headroom is not the right word for what you're describing. Having low headroom would mean that the pedal can't take a very hot input signal without clipping.

Also... "headroom"... you keep using that word.. I do not think it means what you think it means.. @princessbride
I can be kind of a goof, so I would not doubt it.

Yeah you could be right, what do you think "headroom" is? What I am meaning by this term is the amount of room to play with the knob, the are of tweakage. The playing field, so to speak. This could be contrary to how you may use the term, or the right usage.

Who is @princessbride?

akaukal defined it pretty well in his last post... well.. he defined a lack of headroom.

Headroom is simply the amount of signal a pedal/amp/whatever can receive before it begins to clip (distort/nastify) that signal in the output.

Also, the Princess Bride is a movie.

LOL!!! I hear you loud and clear. Still have no idea about @princessbride though? LOL

Rock on, I will have to straighten my crappy terminology up,
Very embarrassing in a very embarrassing way. At least its among family on here, and some dude on TGP did not absolutely humiliate me! Those cats can be brutal, harmony Central is even meaner.

Know that this is cleared up, is there a way to use the term "headroom" to describe what I was talking about? Perhaps a different, better term?

Thanks for your gentleness.

eh, not really a "term"... I probably would have just said there isn't much flexibility on the modulation, it's either not enough or too much.
