I'd still recommend a WD MyPassport Studio drive. Comes preformatted for your Mac, and has a storage gauge on the side. (I believe)

I ordered a LaCie All Terrain portable external hd yesterday.
That makes #3.
One can't have too many back-up drives, imho.

I have two, and I should use them far more often.

setup time machine and you'll never have to think about your backups again. It all happens automatically. When you need to restore something, you just load time machine, find the file or folder you need to restore (or the whole drive) and restore it. It is the easiest and best backup solution i've ever seen. You and your brother could use the same drive for a time machine backup w/o any problems. I have a iMac and Macbook and backup both to my Time Capsule using Time Machine.

Honestly, if you can afford it, I'd recommend a Time Machine. It backs up wirelessly over your wifi network and you don't have to plug in the drive. It's so easy.

It just works :P

I'll have to upgrade my 17" iMac to 10.5+ in order to use TM and will probably do so once I reformat it.
It came with the drop-in-box 10.5 upgrade disc when new, so it'll be a snap.
My new 24" iMac is already loaded w/ 10.5.

Bryan, I had forgotten about Time Capsule. Apple - Time Capsule - Automatic backup for Mac and an 802.11n Wi-Fi base station

I've been doing a lot of reviewing from the products suggested here, and I think i'm going to go with the 320g LaCie rugged thing. It says USB 2.0, i'm not sure what the 2.0 is all about. My Macbook is a regular white macbook 2.4 ghz, no firewire. This will still work?
I'm thinking of ordering from Apple, will I still get the two year warranty that comes with it?

With peace on earth, good will to men.”

Yep. It'll work.

USB Revisions: Universal Serial Bus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
2.0 is faster than 1.1. 3.0, while not widespread yet, is faster than 2.0
