I always seem to pick up a compressor pedal for cheap thinking I'll use it, and I never end up doing so. For instance, I just found a Boss CS-2 for $25, and couldn't pass it up. I need to toy around with it in my setup a little more, but so far it seems like a no-go. For some reason, I can never get a compressor to jive well with how I play.

HOWEVER - I fell in love with the Electro-Harmonix Blackfinger tube compressor. I left it on almost all the time when I had it. It made my sound much more exciting and clear. I had a really good trade opportunity come up, so I kicked it off the board. I would love to own one again someday.

What application are you using it for?

My favorite is the Orange Squeezer type.

I love my pigtronix Philosopher's Tone.

It gives a silky sustain to clean lines that I love, which tends to be a main reason I use distortion, thus in some cases, it completely replaces distortion for me.

It is the first compressor I have ever really bonded with. I use it particularly in conjunction with a host of other effects to give me some really synthy sounds.

Rule of thumb:

If you don't know you need it, you don't.

Following this rule will lead to a happier wallet.

I'm not a compressor person either and I've tried tons of them. I do have a tube Black Finger and it's the only one I've actually liked. If it wasn't for the size of it and it having to run off AC, I probably would use it more.

Good rule. Plus, with compression pedals, if you don't know how to use it correctly, it's gonna hurt you a lot more than help you.

I like the Tube Comp effect on my M13 for the same application BSPE described. I don't use it very often though, usually just when I'm tapping or making ambient sounds.

I use the comp on my mfx pedal sometimes to give me a thicker palm mute, it's fun to mess with.

This negatively affected my tone in ways that I just can't describe.
Then, on a whim, a few years ago I wandered into a Bath and Body Works store at a local mall and picked up some of their gentle foaming anti-bacterial hand cleansers.
The difference in my guitar's sound is so wickedly improved that I no longer feel the need to buy a new amp or pedals or even strings...EVER!
So, it's my belief that tone is in the soap.
Thank you and goodnight.

I have been eyeballing the philosophers tone for a while now. I love a comp for bass, almost a necessity. For guitar, sometimes I feel like it takes away from the dynamics. Maybe I am setting it to high?

Have you ever used the philosophers on bass?

I use mine for guitar, to take away dynamics. I use it mostly in conjunction with some other effects for kinda out there synthy sounds. Used for an ambient effect. I haven't tried it on bass. Typically, with bass, I have always been either no effects, or a little dirt.

Shoot me a PM if you're interested in buying. I'm not in a rush to get it out of here, but if I'm able to turn a little profit on the thing I might be persuaded to send it away.

I'm not generally a big compressor fan on guitar (at least, not as part of the effects chain), but the Philosopher's Tone looks and sounds really interesting to me for the application you described... synthy, ambient and post-rock sorta stuff.. I'm thinking about picking one up soon...
