There is a difference between going to a store and going to an illegal weapons dealer. Not all gun crime is committed by people who would be willing to go an illegal weapons dealer. Making guns illegal certainly wouldn't deter people who would be willing to go to an illegal weapons dealer from committing premeditated crimes. It might however deter otherwise good citizens from committing crimes of passion with guns.

If someone really pisses you off and you just happen to have a gun at your side, you might shoot them. If someone really pisses you off and in order to shoot them, you'd have to figure out where to find an illegal weapons dealer, commit a crime just by going to the dealer and buying a gun, then come back later and shoot them, you might be deterred.

1) I don't think that there's any valid interpretation of the 2nd ammendment that covers the right to do anything but posess (the purpose being to allow millitias to prevent opressive government).

2) Let's not confuse "no open carry" with "no carry". I have a carry-concealed in my state, as an example.

3) I don't think, within cities and the like, open carry is a good idea. The people I've seen open carry within cities are far too careless with their firearms (look at my complaints at the people at tea-party rallies with their hands full, their attention on a news crew, and their non-safety-holster weapon bumping around in a crowd).

I don't prefer to let people know where to reach to steal my weapon. I much prefer concealed carry. I think it's safer for all involved. I also think that needs to have training requirements far higher than I have ever seen mandatate.. or indeed taught outside of some police academies, and some martial arts schools.
