I'm thinking regular bass guitar scale length (£25 rather than £150 for strings for full double bass scale) with a piezo bridge and SOME sort of electric pups,
Here's one my dad and I built. It's full scale (42"), but 34" would be great too. I'd put a piezo under the bridge foot (check out: SDT1 Piezo Film Contact Pickup looks very nice, and the film supposedly works better under pressure than a disc) and build a little buffer circuit for it. Maybe a P-style pickup at the base of the fingerboard and something to blend the two together?
I don't currently own one, but I've played a few and I loved it. I want one now. I also have the urge to want to bow a bass, so I would be looking at one that could be bowed, liked the Ergo 5-stringer.
Very nice Lee. I've been wanting to build one ... and that made the itch worse.
I'd shoot for long scale bass guitar strings. Look more"uprightish" but still cheaper.
Matt
