Although I also find that the throttle position/actual-speed-in-gear relationship is anything but linear when dealing with an automatic transmission, and you always know where your foot is..... That's been my experience, anyway. It's much easier for me to gauge my speed in my manual 'Yota, than in the autotragic Chevy Colorado that I drive as a company vehicle.

My question is this. What did your parents (or other adults) say and/or do that actually encouraged you to drive safe and be responsible? What things did your folks say that actually had an impact and made a difference? I really want to make an impression on my kids that this is serious business.

Nothing. They made me pay for absolutely everything. It helps when your car is yours and you got it through blood, sweat and tears, and your insurance, and your gas.

That said, the close tie in of action to reaction hitting me in the wallet made me fairly safe.
