Virus help

So my Dad was using one of our computers and a fake virus warning came up on his webpage. Sadly he fell fore it and downloaded the "patch". The virus somehow disabled the current anti-virus (avast) and I cant get any programs to work.

Any way to fix this? There isn't too much in the way of valuable data on it, but there are a few things that I reaaaaalllly hope to recover.

Thanks much.

Yep. What would the next step be?

I considered a system restore, but wasn't sure whether that would correct the problem.

well, on second thought, do you have the bandwidth to download an Ubuntu liveCD (at ~700MB)?
and a blank CD to burn it to?

oh, well then boot into Safe Mode, and use ClamWin Portable | PortableApps.com - Portable software for USB drives on a flash drive, if you have one, to scan for, and delete the virus.

Uh oh, a history of visiting adult sites has been found? Awkward. Luckily if you just click on that thingy you can eliminate all vulnerability immediately.

I deleted 9 trojan horses and 1 adware program then I deleted that "ACommander" program manually. Avast still wont work though. Not sure whether there are any other issues... I'm not turning it off yet though.

Download MalwareBytes. Nine times out of ten, it'll remove rogue antispyware/antivirus programs like the one you got.

Listen to the "Internet advisor" ever? my dad is a huge fan of talk radio and he keeps saying that I should try that cause they said to.

On a side note I tried reinstalling Avast, but I cant get it to work... other than that the computer appears to be fine once more.
