Doctor Who

Kinda of already expected there to be a thread on this.....

Anyways, anyone else watch the season premiere?
I rather enjoyed it myself, although its gonna be the first season of it that I've watched(I know, shame on me, although I have seen the 2 specials from Tennant)

What did you guys think?

I watched the show every once in a while when Tennant was the Doctor, but I haven't seen it since losing cable a year ago.

I too am interested to hear what others think of the newest cast.

I'd have to say the new Doctor is rather wacky...one of the first things he did was eat fish dipped in custard...o.0

I love the new Doctor. He is, if I may borrow an expression from one of the former Doctors... fantastic.

And Moffat's writing is WAY better than RTD's. He's totally taken this show to the totally awesome level!

I was a huge fan of Tennant's Doctor, but I'm incredibly impressed by Smith. I've seen the first two episodes of the new season now, about to watch the third, and I'm really excited to see where he takes this role.

I've just started watching Doctor Who. I really wish I could start at Doctor 1 season one, but alas, I did not... and now I'm very confused as to where in the series I am... How many seasons has this show run? I just finished watching the first season with David Tennant (who is incredible). I'm about to start watching whatever season came prior to that.

Alright, here's where it gets complicated.

Doctor Who ran from 1963 to 1989 (26 seasons*), before being cancelled by the BBC. This is referred to as "Classic" Doctor Who, and featured Doctors 1-7. Classic Doctor Who ran in serials, sets of anywhere from three to six episodes that tell one story.

There was also a TV movie made in 1996, featuring the 8th Doctor.

The series was revived in 2005 with the 9th Doctor, Christopher Eccleston. Tennant replaced Eccleston for Series 2, and Matt Smith replaced Tennant for Series 5. The trailer is for Series 6 of the new Doctor Who.

*Classic Doctor Who had seasons, New Doctor Who has Series.

wow... okay.... your right.... complicated...

So I get to enjoy another 2 "series" of Tennant before the doctor changes.... that's good at least...

So, series 5 AND 6 are both this Matt Smith guy? or is series 6 a new doctor again?

So basically, if I understand the way this works right.... they can replace the actor only 2 more times, before the whole show has to die... based on the number of times he's able to regenerate...

Five and six are Matt Smith, who is an excellent Doctor. Also: Tennant did series 2, 3, 4, and a set of four specials between series 4 and 5.

And.... maybe. There are several theories, one being that a Time Lord's regeneration limit was a law held in place by the Time Lords, who are extinct save for the Doctor, so that may not be true anymore. The Doctor also made an off-hand comment in The Sarah Jane Adventures (A spin-off series) that he could regenerate 507 times, but that's been discounted as, in context, it was to get someone to shut up.

In case anyone is a little behind on their knowledge of the Whoniverse, here's all 47 years of its history in under six minutes.
