About a week ago i was dinking around with the action on my bass trying to get rid of that annoying click that i got on the low strings when i put in a hard attack. So i raised up the action on the E and A strings and left the D and G strings where they are. Before i divulge the actual action on my bass i want to ask you guys...


What actions do you use? I know a lot of people use a sloped sort of action, gradually getting lower with the smaller strings. That's not how mine ended up, although i might change it a bit.

Now i'll divulge my info (I'm pretty proud of it because i looked up recommended bass actions and 1/8 kept popping up. Mine is no where close to that

E and A strings: 5/64ths

D and G strings: 3/64ths

I used a Varnier Caliber to measure, since my dad's a locksmith and we had one on hand, so i'm pretty sure about the accuracy.

I'll ask again for the people who skipped the middle of my post.
What actions do you use, what kind of style do you play with said action, etc?

I really find it varies bass to bass.
What feels and sounds right on one bass doesn't feel right on the other.

On my handmade P bass I like a really high action with nice and thick strings. I play pretty much anything with this bass.
On my Mann P bass I've got the action set pretty low right now. At the moment this is my 'go to' bass. Again, I play pretty much everything with it.
On my T-20 I like it right in the middle of the other two. I play fairly exclusively rock with a pick on this bass right
now.
My Warmoth I had set up like my T-20, right in the middle. I pretty exclusively played funk with this. (I say 'played' because it currently doesn't have a neck on it)

I don't actually have anything to measure with, but when I say 'really high' I mean other players get annoyed when they try to play my P bass.

I play mostly country, gospel, and a little of the 60/70s rock on my basses.
I set them pretty much all the same.
The action is as low as possible and still not rattle and buzz.

As low as my bass goes. Playing light is the secret to being a better bass player in my opinion, a lot of good bass players do that. Then it takes less effort for your right hand, and your left hand can move around a lot faster with less pressure and fatigue.

O feel that K-lub. The tone is in the hands. I like my action nice and low. And after much searching, seeking, and many basses later I figured out I really like the Ibanez Soundgear neck and super low quick action. I can play and respect all the other flavors, but I am home with a Ibanez Soundgear in my hands. I accept this now and will settle with a nice higher end SR as my main and only bass probably for a while.

A bass cant get much lower action, yet it still maintains that urban gospel slap and pop that is a must for me!

If there was nothing wrong with the action and no playability issues, I would put the axction back where it was and lower the pups.
