worship music

apart from the times when you sing/play it at church, do you or should you listen to the stuff that your church worship team plays, in your own time?

Hmm...

From the angle of a worship team member, I think it's important to listen to songs your team is doing in order to familiarize yourself with the song. That being said, I rarely listen to worship music outside of when I'm learning a new song that my team is doing.

At my church I would say this varies more from person to person than it is an actual church stance. My previous pastor used to talk a lot about the importance of exposing your kids to worship music in the car and what not. I never really heard that from anyone else.

I listen to worship a lot!
Not to say that I don't listen to other kinds of music or anything, but
I just like it!

Find some really interesting worship music that you can listen to, and you wont be able to stop

For instance, i find Lincoln Brewster really interesting and exciting, so i listen to that a lot in my spare time, both for it's message and it's musical quality.

I have a mix CD of worship songs that I pop in occasionally, but in general I don't listen to worship music all that often. Although after playing the same songs for two back-to-back services on Sunday mornings, I usually have them stuck in my head for the rest of the week, so I can often be found humming a hymn or two.

Other than Lincoln Brewster, I rarely listen to any worship songs apart from church. I'm in two praise bands though. One is edgier than a typical worship band, and the other has a more southern rock tilt. So I take what I know from listening to modern rock and southern rock and apply it to what I'm playing. Occasionally I'll throw some soul/r&b licks in there. So most of what I play in praise and worship doesn't come from praise and worship. Neither of those bands actually play in church, so we have more freedom to branch out into things that wouldn't really be acceptable by the church music police.

^Personally, I think it's important to listen to music that glorifies God, but not necessarily the praise and worship music we play at Church. The main reason that style is used is because that's what the majority of the church population finds pleasant to listen to. You can find music that glorifies God in pretty much any genre.

my collection has a bunch of worship albums in the vein of third day offerings/ delirious - deeper, etc and it's pretty much just on shuffle, so if they come up, they come up. I don't really seek it out or avoid it as such.

I started working for WorshipMusic.com at the end of last year... subsequently, my worship music catalog (and listening thereof) has grown pretty significantly. There's a lot of really great stuff out there besides the handful of regular songs that get played on the radio or rotated through set lists. The last couple of years have been great for independent worship music.

Also, while at work, I will usually listen to the prayer room webcast at the International House of Prayer ( International House of Prayer )
