I believe it's traditional in Hollywood to portray people from Classical civilizations with British accents, and those at the rougher edges of those civilizations with Irish or Scottish accents. For American audiences, this gives us a sense of timelessness and otherness. The various American accents have only evolved in the past century or two, so our voice sounds odd to non-American English speakers in the mouth of an ancient.
