Either that or it would sound really nasty and cool.

I question whether a vocoder/talkbox effect will be effective on bass unless you're using a bass sound with a lot of treble on it. I think it stands to reason that if you're using the human voice-machinery to shape the envelope of a note, the note had best contain some tonal element that's somewhere within your own singing range.

That said, why not try dummying up a talkbox and seeing what happens? Get a cheap amp, tape a funnel or similar completely over the speaker. Run a piece of tubing from the funnel up to your mouth. Play your bass into the amp. All the sound goes up the tube and into your mouth, which is what you use to shape the sound. If THAT sounds workable then you do all of that into a vocal microphone (into a PA or another amp) so other people can hear it. The vocoder (probably a more reliable option in the long run) was probably invented to bypass the Heath Robinson gizmo I've just described.

You can probably see a talkbox being used if there's any old Peter Frampton stuff on Youtube. Note the piece of tubing taped to, and ending beside, his vocal mic. Good grief, I'm working off 35-year-old memories here. Someone stop me.

OK, back from church and got time to look for Peter Frampton... you can see the tube clearly around 2:20

YouTube - Peter Frampton-Show me the way-1976

.... and that Stevie Wonder clip was wonderful.....

(edit to add) I forgot to say, they must have got the volume of the talkbox just right so that he could move from his vocal to the guitar solo instantly (keep in mind that both the vocal and the guitar solos are coming to us via the vocal mic)

It probably really varies based on your voice. In general, the band featured in the video (Pomplamoose) has a very lo-fi, indie sound. What you describe as airy, just sounds like Pomplamoose to me.
