So: who likes, who hates it? I like it, overall. I enjoyed Lillard's performance (dude played Shaggy in the live action Scooby movies).
A classic scene, though a warning for language.
It's heavy-handed at times, but apparently a good look at the Salt Lake City punk movement (which, of course, feels like a second-hand version of the oft-mythologized and equally disappointing LA and NY scenes).
This scene embodies the directing that I really like in this film, the blend of quick cuts in the middle of a character's rants, the slow-downs:
Language warning, again.
I think the posing of the characters was intentional. In the scene above, a wannabe punk and group of wannabe mods threaten to fight, then the punk addresses the friendlier mod and mentions one of their moms driving them to soccer practice.
This, I always felt, showed that the film was examining how suburban kids rebel. Of course it looks ridiculous from the outside (we
all look ridiculous from the outside; in all honesty, there are no cool people, not even Tom Waits), but it's personal myth-making that allows one to feel better than others.
It's a touching film, overall.
