it is an inescapable law of the amp world that...

... every electric guitarist will, at some stage, own an amp that is too loud for his needs.

Discuss. :-)

What is this "too loud" you speak of?

Fact:

Most amps that are of any decent quality are way louder than most people ever play them.

Reminds me of a time at worship practice, I was using someone else's Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. He had me turn it up all the way just for fun for a few seconds.

Wow. and that was just a 1x12 40w combo.

This negatively affected my tone in ways that I just can't describe.
Then, on a whim, a few years ago I wandered into a Bath and Body Works store at a local mall and picked up some of their gentle foaming anti-bacterial hand cleansers.
The difference in my guitar's sound is so wickedly improved that I no longer feel the need to buy a new amp or pedals or even strings...EVER!
So, it's my belief that tone is in the soap.
Thank you and goodnight.

I turned up my 15 watt Tiny Terror 1x12 all the way... and it scared me half to death with the first note.

I turned up my Mesa F-50 all the way, through my 2x12.... left the room with the door closed and the cord under it.... stood down the hall, and played. Yikes. I went back into my room, and a bunch of my stuff had fallen over. Books, binders, etc.

Duuude, that's crazy. Like when Michael J Fox plugged in that wall-sized amp and blew himself backwards.

When I lived downtown next door to a taxi driver who worked all day I was able to turn my Bassman up all the way almost any time I wanted to. I recorded some of my favorite guitar tones with that amp.

Sometimes, playing at church on 2 on the volume dial is like putting handcuffs on.

What are these books?

Well, lets see. 2008, 2009, and 2010 editions of the FAR/AIM.... Most of the FAA's publications on instrument flying/instructing.... several aerodynamics texts... binders full of lesson plans, old school/work procedures handbooks and binders.... all of the applicable PTS.... a bunch of expired maps.... POH's for several things..... etc.

That's the stuff that was on the shelf that fell over, anyway.

Blackstar HT-5, I work the clean channel around 10 o'clock bedroom and 12:30 or 1 in bigger places and those are definitely the sweet spots. I feel like though it is inexpensive, this amp is phenomenal or putting effects in front of and I definitely think it is quality. And it CAN get loud and play with big boys if it needs to. Regularly gels with a drum set (played a bit lower than arena rock or METALZ volume, mind you).

I love my budget set up

I broke a piece of glass once with a 200 watt solid state amp when I was a teen...

I am more than a little afraid of diming the slo even if I had earplugs in...

To quote Mike Soldano to me at Namm "Watch it, that amp'll rip your head off."

This law only applies if you play in church.

But you need the room for playing the big arenas.
